Biography: Akash is a PhD student studying complex reacting flows, synthetic fuels, and energy storage for cleaner and better energy generation technologies. Central to his work is using experimental and numerical techniques to understand the physics and kinetics of these flows. In his spare time, Akash loves hiking, backpacking, and camping. He also loves to write, play chess, and follow the unfortunate travails of the Minnesota Timberwolves with misplaced optimism.


Binit Bipul Singh

Biography: Binit is a doctoral student exploring the energetic behavior of a novel class of metal-coated nanomaterials. These coated core-shell nanoparticles are produced via non-thermal plasma synthesis techniques. Binit assesses the combustion and explosion characteristics of coated core-shell nanoparticles utilized in high-energy-density propulsion applications. In his spare time, Binit likes to go out on nature hiking and camping.

Biography: Gabe is a PhD student investigating supersonic flow and plasma propulsion. He does experimental work with plasmas using a miniature supersonic tunnel with variable Mach 1.2 to 3.5. Gabe enjoys going on trips and outdoor activities with his wife in his free time. He also likes to play hockey and watch the Minnesota Wild.

Biography: Daipayan is a PhD student working on plasma ignition and complex reacting flows. His work revolves around experimental and numerical investigations of pre-chamber combustion characteristics to develop novel ignition technologies. Daipayan loves to bike around and practice digital art in his spare time. He is also an avid soccer fan and follows the trials and tribulations of FC Barcelona.

Biography: Oluwasegun is a PhD student working to develop a novel plasma-assisted technology for methane abatement industrial flares. Such plasma technology can eliminate 20%+ of the total methane emissions worldwide. Oluwasegun very much enjoys listening to music and taking a walk with his wife and little daughter in his spare time. Undeniably, he is a lover of excellence who sets his heart on possibilities.

Biography: Himanshu is a master’s researcher working on developing reliable and robust objection detection algorithms (YoloV3, MaskRCNN) to enable autonomous driving during challenging weather conditions such as rain and snow. In collaboration with the Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) at the University, he is adopting a sensor fusion approach – LiDAR scan, visible and thermal camera, 3D stereoscopic mapping mounted on a MnDOT vehicle, for his project. In his leisure, Himanshu likes to play strategic board games, travel, and cook different cuisines.

Biography: Sydney is a full-time undergraduate intern studying the properties of low-temperature plasma in a high-pressure environment. Currently, she is designing a high-pressure optically accessible experimental chamber capable of reaching 15,000 psi. Sydney plans to perform an array of optical diagnostics methods to explore the fundamentals of plasmas at such high pressures using imaging, laser measurements, X-ray radiography, etc. In her spare time, Sydney enjoys spending time with friends and crocheting.

Biography: Reed is an undergraduate student helping with hands-on laboratory activities. Currently, he is building a fuel injection system for sub-atmospheric RCEM operation. Reed repairs and shoots antique rifles and plays tabletop games in his free time.

Biography: Carissa is an undergraduate research assistant participating in the NSF ME3 REU program. She is working on synthesizing, characterizing, and testing a novel class of superparamagnetic nanoparticles focusing on energy harvesting and applications. Carissa enjoys hiking, going to the beach when it’s nice out, and reading a good book on a rainy day. She plans on enrolling in a Ph.D. program next fall to research improving energy generation/storage methods.

Biography: Vincent is an undergraduate researcher developing an open-source parametric calculator for the zeroth-order design of bipropellant liquid rocket engines. His research interests include liquid rocket engines, manned spaceflight hardware, and turbomachinery. In his spare time, he enjoys playing guitar and photography. He is a member of AIAA and the University of Minnesota Rocket Team.
